GeoEye Site Redesign

On Friday, October 29, 2010 GeoEye launched a new corporate website.

GeoEye approached BrainSpark this past summer about refreshing their corporate site to incorporate the company’s three new business lines (Imagery Collection, Production Services, and Information Services). BrainSpark’s team consisting of a user experience architect, project managers, web designers and developers worked closely with the GeoEye marketing and IT teams to determine the necessary updates to the existing corporate site, also designed and built by BSM.

The primary objective was integrating the three business lines into the overall design and architecture of the site. To accomplish this, BrainSpark overhauled the information architecture to support updated and newly added content and messaging and introduced the business line secondary navigation bar to emphasize these categories on the home page and throughout the Products & Services section.

As the use of Flash continues to be a growing concern in web design, BSM wanted to make GeoEye’s corporate site more mobile friendly. On the previous corporate site, the focal point on the home page was Flash-based. The new focal point contains updated imagery corresponding with their respective business lines, and was built using jQuery technology, resulting in a more effective display on mobile devices.

Another major enhancement focused on the global navigation. BSM introduced mega menus as part of the new site navigation. The mega menus display more information, allowing a user to more easily access information throughout the site. With the large volume of content, this update will add greater ease for users browsing for specific information within GeoEye.com.

The overall visual design of the site and content within was retooled to address GeoEye’s evolving business and better serve the needs of their target audience. Content throughout the site was analyzed, rewritten and updated as needed. At the same time, the new design retains key elements of the previous site to maintain some consistency with existing audience.

The project team put forth a great deal of time and effort in planning and executing the “refresh” project and we congratulate all involved on a job well done. Be sure to check out the new website at http://www.geoeye.com. We welcome your feedback.

Favorite thing about BrainSpark: Helpful employees, awesome work, great clients.

The past couple months have been eventful ones here at BrainSpark. With a large amount of exciting new projects with a variety of clients, we are thrilled to share our latest work…

Nothin’ Like a Corduroy Goomer

In January, BSM developed a one of a kind “Groomed Runs Report” for Arapahoe Basin. This report allows the content managers to select which runs have been groomed that day, and a report is created highlighting the selected groomed runs. In addition to posting the report on the snow conditions page, the ski patrol can send the report to the local ski shops in the area letting the skiers and riders know of the groomed runs that day. All you ski bums out there, keep an eye out for the new reports, and have fun on the slopes!

New GeoEye Developments

GeoEye recently hired BrainSpark Media to lead user experience for two new web based service offering for GeoEye customers. BSM will be providing UI design, information architecture, and usability services on the new offerings. We are extremely excited to work with GeoEye on these innovative projects.

Fresh Packaging

BSM created the packaging design for PENTAX Imaging’s new Ultimate Zoom rifle scope. The design was the fifth premium rifle scope package designed for the PENTAX Sport Optics line in the past six months. Keep an eye out for the scope in your local sporting good store.

HPJ Blog

More recently, in February BSM created a new WordPress blog for Hyde Park Jewelers. The new blog highlights Hyde Park news and events, current happenings in the industry, product releases, and community involvements. BrainSpark created a custom template for Hyde Park, which complements hydeparkjewelers.com. Take a look!

GeoEye + Google

BSM spent the last couple months developing and implementing a GeoEye Google Earth layer. Layers allow the users to take a closer look at a subject, or read a little about what they are looking at. BSM created the user interface of the layer, a bigger project than meets the eye. With a confined space, and working with Google’s set parameters, BrainSpark was able to create a really cool satellite imagery layer. But don’t take my word for it, go check it out!

Google Earth Download

To enable the GeoEye layer:

  1. Click on the “Layers” dropdown on the left side of the screen
  2. Expand the “More” icon on the bottom of the list
  3. Check the “GeoEye Featured Imagery” checkbox
  4. Now, when scanning Google Earth you will be able to click on the small GeoEye icons and see incredible pictures and detailed information provided by GeoEye.

Coming Soon – GeoEye 101

BSM has been working on GeoEye microsite called GeoEye 101. This microsite will explain the Google Earth layer, and how geospatial imaging works. The site will be loaded with videos and tutorials about the technology. Keep your eyes on BrainSparkMedia.com or blog.BrainSparkMedia.com for the launch.

2008 Davey Awards: BrainSpark wins a gold and two silver

It was a good day today, as we were notified that all three BSM project submissions for the 2008 Davey Awards were selected as winners by the International Academy of the Visual Arts. This was especially exciting, not only because all three entries won, but also because we brought home our first Gold, AND it makes 3/3 for GeoEye.com (WebAwards, W3 and now Davey).

BSM 2008 Davey Award results:

More Bling for GeoEye.com: BSM wins Silver in 2008 W3 Awards, Science Category

Today we were pleased to learn that GeoEye.com won a second award, a Silver W3 Award in the “Science” category.  So far, two for two in the contests entered, with a few more possibilities to be announced in the weeks to come.  Needless to say, we’re fired up.

The W³ Awards honors creative excellence on the web, and recognizes the creative and marketing professionals behind award winning sites, videos and marketing programs. Simply put, the is the first major web competition to be accessible to the biggest agencies, the smallest firms, and everyone in between. Small firms are as likely to win as Fortune 500 companies and international agencies.
